FAQ for the BYD Dolphin Surf Boost, the mid-spec trim in BYD’s Dolphin Surf city-car range

What is the Dolphin Surf Boost?
It’s the middle of three trim levels in the Dolphin Surf lineup (Active, Boost, Comfort)  a small all-electric hatchback aimed at rivals like the Renault 5, Citroën ë-C3, and Hyundai Inster.

How much does it cost?
The Boost trim is priced at $26,950

What’s the battery and range?
It has a 46.0 kWh gross battery with 43.2 kWh usable capacity, using LFP chemistry. Official range is 200 miles WLTP — noticeably more than the entry-level Active’s 137 miles.

How powerful is it, and how fast?
The Boost produces 65 kW (88 hp) and 175 Nm of torque, taking 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 12.1 seconds, with a top speed of 93 mph (shared across all trims).

How does charging work?
The bigger battery charges at up to 85kW peak DC, giving roughly a half-hour 10-80% top-up. Because both batteries use LFP chemistry, they can be regularly charged to 100% or run close to empty without harming battery health.

What extra equipment does Boost add over the base Active trim?
It upgrades the Active’s 15in steel wheels to 16in alloys, and adds auto wipers, electric folding mirrors, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

What’s missing compared to the top Comfort trim?
Comfort adds 360-degree parking cameras, tinted rear windows, and heated seats — none of which come on the Boost.

How does it drive?
It’s easy to place on the road and thread through tight streets thanks to good forward visibility, though rear/over-the-shoulder visibility is weaker, and it can feel jiggly over rough roads.

What about insurance?
Boost sits in insurance group 14A, the same as the Active — noticeably lower than the more powerful Comfort in group 19D.

Does it have keyless entry?
Yes  a button on the door handle works with the key in your pocket, and there’s also an NFC sensor on the mirror that unlocks via smartphone or smartwatch using the BYD app, features shared across the range.
